Roses and Violets: Here’s to a True Valentine’s Day

“Roses are red;

Violets are blue…

I’ve got a Valentine;

I bet you’re wondering who!”

Well, it’s about that time again. The reds and greens of Christmas decor have long ago been replaced by the reds and pinks of Valentine’s Day. I don’t know about you other single folk, but does Valentine’s Day ever feel like a slap in the face to those of us who don’t have a “significant other” to spend a romantic evening with? I used to be in the same boat. Heck, I was the captain of that boat! I don’t know how it was decided that red and pink and hearts symbolize love. Well, those at least make sense if you think about it. But a half-naked baby with wings who shoots arrows at people? That sounds kinda twisted to me…

Needless to say, I’ve been putting a lot of thought into this Valentine’s Day thing lately. But you know what’s at the heart (pun most definitely intended) of Valentine’s Day? Love! Yes, I know, this was completely anti-climactic, but hang on for just a moment.

You see, love is not what Hollywood says it is! Love is not sex. (Yes, I started with the big guns there.) Love is not based on emotions as much as we claim it to be. Love is not simple.

I’ve been looking at love all wrong. The way I was looking at love caused me to wrinkle my nose in disgust every time I saw Valentine’s Day paraphernalia. The way I was looking at love filled my heart with bitterness (which is another thing love is not!). The way I was looking at love always left me coming up short, lacking, wanting… more.

Love is deep. Love is complex. Love is sacrificial. Love is more than chemistry between two people. Love is first and foremost between God and His most treasured creation- mankind!

Can I just say how good God is?! He had an amazing conversation with me. He said, “You know this Valentine’s Day thing that you’re basically cringing at the thought of?”

Me: “Yea, I guess. What about it?”

God: “It’s not about you and a guy. It’s about you and Me.

It’s about you and God! God is love! If I could, I would shout that simple truth from the mountaintops. (But I live in Florida where there are no mountains… So, I am writing a blog post instead.) God. Is. Love. God loved me and you and everyone so much He sent His perfect Son, Jesus, to die for us all. Each and every one of us. He died for our sin. So we could be in relationship with Him. That is love. Not that we first loved Him, but that He loved us!

As if it’s not enough that Jesus died for me, He wants to do life with me. Life- as in all of it and every aspect of it- He wants to do life with me. He walks step by step next to me. He allows me to make my own mistakes (and I’ve made plenty), but He still remains faithful. True. Patient. Kind. He calls me back to His side where I know I have nothing to fear. It is at His side that I am safe, wanted, loved, forgiven, and accepted. All of the things I looked for desperately in the world, I have found abundantly in Christ. There is no greater love than this!

So, this Valentine’s Day, I’m not worried that I don’t have a guy to buy me flowers or chocolate or take me to see some overrated chick flick. I’m blessed beyond belief that I am loved by my Creator who woos me daily. Who takes delight in lavishing His love upon me. Who cherishes me and sees me as worthy. This Valentine’s Day, my Valentine is Jesus. No, that’s not the “lonely girl’s answer.” That’s the truth. This Valentine’s Day, I am celebrating the love that I have for my Savior and the great love He has for me.
